15 Gboard Keyboard Tips to Type Faster on Android

Gboard is Google's keyboard and comes pre-installed on many Android phones (and is available for iPhone). It's packed with features most people never discover. These tips will help you type faster and with fewer mistakes.

Open Gboard settings

Tap the gear icon on the keyboard's top row, or go to Settings → System → Keyboard → Gboard.

1. Glide typing

Slide your finger from letter to letter without lifting. It's faster than tapping once you get used to it. Enable it in Glide typing settings.

2. Voice typing

Tap the microphone and speak. Say "comma", "full stop" or "question mark" for punctuation. Great for long messages.

3. Clipboard

Tap the clipboard icon to see recently copied items and pin frequent ones like your address.

4. Move the cursor precisely

Slide your finger left or right along the spacebar to move the cursor.

5. Delete whole words

Swipe left from the backspace key to select and delete multiple words.

6. Quick capitals

Double-tap Shift for caps lock, or slide from Shift to a letter to type one capital.

7. Quick numbers and symbols

Long-press letters in the top row for numbers, or turn on the number row in Preferences.

8. Text shortcuts

In Dictionary → Personal dictionary, add a shortcut, like "addr" for your full address or "brb" for "be right back".

9. One-handed mode

Tap the menu (four squares) → One-handed to shrink the keyboard to one side.

10. Multiple languages

Add languages in Languages. Gboard supports Urdu, Hindi, Arabic and many more, including transliteration where you type in English letters and get Urdu script.

11. Translate while typing

Tap the menu → Translate, type in your language, and Gboard inserts the translation.

12. Emoji search and suggestions

Search emojis by word, and turn on emoji suggestions.

13. Themes

Choose a dark theme or add key borders for easier typing.

14. Keyboard height

In Preferences, adjust Keyboard height for bigger keys.

15. Privacy settings

In Privacy, you can turn off personalised suggestions and delete learned words. Use incognito mode in your browser, and Gboard won't learn from what you type there.

Start with three: spacebar cursor control, clipboard and voice typing. More productivity tips in keyboard shortcuts for Windows.

Typing Urdu and other languages comfortably

Gboard supports many South Asian languages. For Urdu, you can add either the Urdu script keyboard or a transliteration layout, where you type Roman Urdu using English letters and Gboard converts it into Urdu script. This is much easier if you're used to texting in Roman Urdu. To add it:

  1. Gboard settings → Languages → Add keyboard.
  2. Search "Urdu" and choose the layout you prefer (script or transliteration).
  3. Switch languages with the globe key or by sliding the spacebar.

Gboard can also suggest words in multiple languages at once, so bilingual typing is smooth.

Fixing common Gboard problems

  • Keyboard lags: clear Gboard's cache in Settings → Apps → Gboard → Storage, and turn off features you don't use, like GIF suggestions.
  • Wrong autocorrect: long-press a suggested word and drag it to "Remove suggestion", or delete learned words in Dictionary settings.
  • Keyboard disappeared: make sure Gboard is enabled in Settings → System → Keyboard → On-screen keyboard.
  • Voice typing not working: check microphone permission for Gboard and download offline speech recognition for your language.

Privacy reminder

Your keyboard sees everything you type, including passwords. Stick with well-known keyboards like Gboard or your phone's built-in keyboard, and avoid unknown keyboard apps that promise themes or fonts. See app permissions.

Frequently asked questions

Is Gboard safe?

Gboard is made by Google and processes most typing on your device. Avoid unknown third-party keyboards, which can see everything you type.

How do I switch keyboards?

Settings → System → Keyboard → On-screen keyboard, or tap the keyboard icon at the bottom when typing.
