How to Share or See Your Wi-Fi Password on Android and iPhone
Guests always ask for the Wi-Fi password, and you rarely remember it. Modern phones make sharing Wi-Fi easy without typing a long password, and they can show saved passwords too.
Android: share with a QR code
- Go to Settings → Wi-Fi (or Network & internet → Internet).
- Tap the gear icon next to your connected network.
- Tap Share and confirm with your PIN or fingerprint.
- A QR code appears, and on many phones the password is displayed below it.
Your guest opens their camera app, points it at the QR code and taps the prompt to connect. Most Android phones and iPhones can scan these codes directly from the camera.
Android: Quick Share
On newer Android phones, the Share screen may also offer Quick Share to send the network details to nearby devices.
iPhone: share with nearby Apple devices
If your guest has an iPhone and is in your contacts, simply bring the phones close together while their phone is on the Wi-Fi password screen. A Share Password prompt appears on your iPhone. Tap it.
iPhone: see a saved password
Go to Settings → Wi-Fi, tap the (i) next to the network, then tap the Password field and authenticate with Face ID. You can copy it. Newer iOS versions also show Wi-Fi passwords in the Passwords app.
Windows: see a saved password
Go to Settings → Network & internet → Wi-Fi, click your network properties, and choose View Wi-Fi security key (available on recent Windows 11 versions). On older versions, open Control Panel → Network and Sharing Center → click your Wi-Fi → Wireless Properties → Security → Show characters.
Router sticker and settings
If you never changed the password, it's usually printed on a sticker on the router. To change it, see how to change your Wi-Fi password.
If the QR code doesn't work
- Camera doesn't detect it: make sure QR scanning is enabled in camera settings, or use Google Lens. Increase screen brightness on the phone showing the code.
- Connects but no internet: the guest may have joined a similar-named network. Check the network name.
- Old phones: some older devices can't scan Wi-Fi QR codes. Show the password under the QR code or type it manually.
- Laptops: Windows laptops can't scan QR codes directly. Read the password from your phone's share screen.
Make a Wi-Fi sign for guests or a shop
For a small business, guest room or family home, a printed card saves repeating the password:
- Take a screenshot of the Wi-Fi QR code from your phone's share screen (ideally for a guest network).
- Paste it into a document with the text "Scan to join Wi-Fi" and the network name.
- Print and place it where guests can see it.
Reputable QR generators can also create Wi-Fi codes if you type the network name, security type and password. Avoid entering your main home password into unknown websites; use your phone's built-in generator instead.
Security reminder
Anyone with the QR code or password can join your network. For shops and cafés, use a separate guest network, change its password periodically, and keep your main network private. At home, review connected devices every few months. See removing unknown devices from Wi-Fi.
