Phone Charging Slowly or Not at All? How to Fix It
Plugging in your phone overnight and waking up to 40% is frustrating. Slow or unreliable charging usually comes down to the cable, charger, port or software settings, and most causes are easy to fix.
1. Try another cable and charger
Cables are the most common failure point. They wear out at the ends even when they look fine. Try a different, good-quality cable and the original charger. Cheap cables often can't carry fast-charging power.
2. Clean the charging port
Pocket lint builds up in the port and stops the plug from seating fully. Turn off the phone and shine a light into the port. Gently remove lint with a wooden toothpick or plastic tool. Never use metal pins or water.
3. Use a wall socket, not a laptop
Laptop USB ports and car chargers provide much less power than a wall charger. For fast charging, use a charger that supports your phone's fast-charging standard.
4. Don't use heavy apps while charging
Gaming, video calls or hotspot while charging can use almost as much power as is going in, and the heat slows charging further.
5. Let it cool down
Phones pause or slow charging when hot to protect the battery. Remove the case and move out of the sun. See phone overheating fixes.
6. Check battery protection settings
Many phones now stop at 80–85% or charge slowly overnight to protect the battery. On Samsung, check Battery → Battery protection; on Pixel, Adaptive charging; on iPhone, Optimized Battery Charging. These are features, not faults. Also check that Fast charging is turned on in battery settings.
7. Restart and update
Software glitches can affect charging. Restart and install system updates.
8. Check for problem apps
If the battery drains even while charging, a background app may be working hard. Check battery usage, or test in Safe Mode.
9. Check battery health
Old batteries charge and drain unpredictably. If battery health is poor, a replacement at an authorised service centre can fix both charging and battery life.
When to get it repaired
- The phone only charges when the cable is held at an angle (loose port).
- You see moisture warnings that won't go away after drying.
- The battery is swollen or the phone gets very hot.
Understanding charging speeds
Phones support different fast-charging standards, and charging only reaches top speed when phone, charger and cable all support the same standard.
| Component | What to check |
|---|---|
| Charger | Wattage (like 18W, 25W, 45W) and standard (USB Power Delivery, brand-specific) |
| Cable | Rated for the current; some cheap cables limit speed |
| Phone | Maximum supported wattage |
Also note that phones charge fastest from about 10% to 50%, then slow down deliberately as the battery fills. Seeing slow progress from 80% to 100% is normal and protects the battery.
Charging habits that help
- Charge in a cool place, off soft surfaces.
- Remove thick cases during fast charging if the phone gets warm.
- Use battery protection or adaptive charging features.
- Don't leave the phone in hot cars or sunlight while charging.
- Keep a certified power bank for long days rather than letting the battery hit 0% often.
Check charging with an app?
Apps that claim to measure charging current can give a rough idea, but readings vary between phones. The simplest test is practical: note the percentage, charge for 30 minutes with the phone idle, and compare with a different cable and charger.

Frequently asked questions
Is wireless charging slower?
Usually, yes. It also produces more heat. Align the phone correctly on the pad for best results.
Can I use a higher-watt charger?
Yes. Phones only draw the power they support, as long as the charger is a quality, certified one.
