How to Save Mobile Data on Android: 12 Practical Tips

Mobile data packages run out fast, especially with video apps, social media and automatic updates. Android includes tools to track and limit data use, and a few changes in your apps make a big difference.

1. See which apps use the most data

Go to Settings → Network & internet → Mobile network → App data usage (Samsung: Connections → Data usage). The list shows the biggest data users. Focus on those first.

2. Turn on Data Saver

Data Saver stops most apps from using data in the background. Find it in Network settings or Quick Settings. You can allow important apps like WhatsApp to bypass it.

3. Set a data warning and limit

In data usage settings, set your billing cycle, a warning (such as 80% of your package) and an optional limit where mobile data turns off.

4. Update apps only on Wi-Fi

In the Play Store, tap your profile → Settings → Network preferences → Auto-update apps → Over Wi-Fi only.

5. Lower video quality

Video is the biggest data user. In YouTube, go to Settings → Video quality preferences → On mobile networks → Data saver. Netflix, TikTok, Instagram and Facebook also have data saver options in settings.

6. Stop autoplaying videos

Turn off autoplay in Facebook, Instagram and other social apps' media settings.

7. WhatsApp settings

  • Settings → Storage and data → Media auto-download: set mobile data to download nothing or only photos.
  • Turn on Use less data for calls.

8. Back up photos only on Wi-Fi

In Google Photos backup settings, turn off backing up over mobile data.

9. Download for offline use on Wi-Fi

Download playlists, videos and offline maps at home on Wi-Fi.

10. Use Chrome's Lite options and close tabs

Reduce data by closing unused tabs and avoiding pages with autoplay videos.

11. Watch out for Wi-Fi assist features

Some phones switch to mobile data automatically when Wi-Fi is weak. Look for options like "Switch to mobile data" in Wi-Fi advanced settings and turn them off if you want to save data.

12. Be careful with hotspots

Laptops connected to your hotspot may download Windows updates. Set the hotspot as a metered connection on the laptop.

Biggest savings: lower video quality, stop autoplay, and restrict WhatsApp auto-download on mobile data.

Plan your monthly data budget

Knowing roughly how much data your habits use helps you pick the right package and avoid running out.

Activity (per hour)Approximate data
WhatsApp text messagingVery little
WhatsApp voice callAbout 1 MB per minute or less
WhatsApp video callRoughly 5–10 MB per minute
Social media scrolling with videosSeveral hundred MB
YouTube at 480pAbout 250–500 MB
YouTube at 1080pAbout 1.5–3 GB
Music streamingAbout 50–150 MB

These are estimates; apps vary. Check your phone's data usage screen after a normal week to see your real pattern, then multiply by four for a monthly estimate.

Hidden data drains

  • Cloud sync of photos, videos and files over mobile data.
  • App updates when auto-update is set to any network.
  • Background refresh of news, email and social apps.
  • Autoplaying video ads in free apps and games.
  • Malware or adware that loads ads constantly. If data usage spikes for an app you rarely use, investigate or uninstall it.

Use Wi-Fi smartly

Do large downloads, backups and updates at home or at work on Wi-Fi. Make sure your phone automatically connects to trusted networks, but avoid auto-joining open public networks. See public Wi-Fi safety.

Frequently asked questions

How much data does video use?

Standard definition uses a few hundred MB per hour, while HD can use 1.5–3 GB per hour or more.

Does Data Saver stop notifications?

It can delay them for apps not allowed unrestricted data. Add important apps as exceptions.
