How to Back Up and Restore Contacts on Android
Losing all your contacts when a phone breaks or gets stolen is painful. The good news is that backing up contacts on Android is easy and mostly automatic, as long as they're saved in the right place.
Where are your contacts saved?
Contacts can be stored in different places:
- Google account: synced to the cloud automatically. Best option.
- Phone (device): only on that phone. Lost if the phone is lost.
- SIM card: limited storage and details. Lost if the SIM is damaged.
- Samsung account or other brand accounts.
Open the Contacts app, then tap your profile or menu to see which accounts are used.
Move contacts to your Google account
- Open the Google Contacts app (install it from the Play Store if needed).
- Tap Fix & manage → Move contacts from device or Import from SIM.
- Choose your Google account.
Set your Google account as the default for new contacts in the Contacts app settings.
Make sure sync is on
Go to Settings → Google → Settings for Google apps → Google Contacts sync and turn on automatic sync. You can check your contacts from any computer at contacts.google.com.
Export a backup file
For an extra copy:
- In Google Contacts, tap Fix & manage → Export to file.
- Choose the account. A
.vcffile is saved. - Copy it to your computer or cloud storage.
Restore contacts
- New phone: sign in to the same Google account, and contacts appear automatically.
- From a VCF file: Google Contacts → Fix & manage → Import from file.
- Deleted by mistake: at contacts.google.com, click the settings gear → Undo changes to restore contacts as they were up to 30 days ago.
Clean up duplicates
Google Contacts' Merge & fix finds duplicate contacts and combines them.
Switching to iPhone?
Add your Google account on the iPhone and turn on Contacts sync, or use Move to iOS. See transferring to a new phone.
Contacts for small businesses
If you run a small business from your phone, your contacts list is valuable. A few extra steps help:
- Use labels in Google Contacts, like "Customers", "Suppliers" and "Family", to organise and export groups separately.
- Add details such as company name and notes, which sync across devices.
- Export monthly to a VCF or CSV file and keep it in cloud storage and on your computer.
- Use a separate Google account for business contacts if you share the phone with work and personal life.
Solving common contact problems
Contacts missing after switching phones
They were probably saved to the old phone or SIM instead of Google. Put the old SIM or phone back into service and move contacts to Google as described above, or export them from the old phone's Contacts app to a VCF file.
Contacts duplicated
This happens when the same contacts exist in multiple accounts (Google, Samsung, SIM). Use Merge & fix in Google Contacts, and choose one main account for storing contacts.
WhatsApp shows numbers instead of names
WhatsApp reads names from your phone contacts. Make sure contacts sync is on and WhatsApp has contacts permission, then refresh contacts in WhatsApp.
Emergency numbers
Write down a few essential numbers on paper, like family members and your doctor. If your phone is lost, you may not remember them.
Frequently asked questions
Do WhatsApp contacts back up separately?
WhatsApp uses your phone's contacts. Back up contacts to Google and they'll appear in WhatsApp on a new phone.
Can I print my contacts?
Yes, export them from contacts.google.com as CSV and open in a spreadsheet.
