iPhone Keyboard Tips: Type Faster with Fewer Mistakes
You probably type hundreds of messages a week on your iPhone. These keyboard tricks will save time and frustration.
1. Turn the keyboard into a trackpad
Press and hold the spacebar until letters disappear, then slide to move the cursor exactly where you want.
2. Swipe typing (QuickPath)
Slide your finger from letter to letter without lifting. Turn it on in Settings → General → Keyboard → Slide to Type.
3. Dictation
Tap the microphone and speak. iOS adds punctuation automatically and you can edit text while dictating.
4. Text replacement
In Settings → General → Keyboard → Text Replacement, create shortcuts like "addr" for your address or "omw" for "On my way!". They sync to your other Apple devices.
5. Quick numbers and symbols
Hold the 123 key and slide to a number or symbol, then release. You return to letters automatically.
6. Special characters
Hold a letter to see accented versions, like é or ñ.
7. Caps lock
Double-tap the Shift key.
8. Quick full stop
Double-tap the spacebar to add a full stop and space.
9. Undo
Swipe left with three fingers to undo, or shake your iPhone.
10. One-handed keyboard
Hold the emoji or globe key and choose the left or right keyboard layout.
11. Add languages
In Keyboard settings, add keyboards like Urdu, Arabic or Hindi. Switch using the globe key.
12. Search emoji
In the emoji keyboard, use the search bar to find emoji by word.
13. Predictive text
Suggestions above the keyboard and inline predictions help you finish words faster. Press the spacebar to accept an inline suggestion.
14. Third-party keyboards
You can install keyboards like Gboard. Be cautious about giving any keyboard "Full Access", since it could send what you type online. See Gboard tips.
15. Keyboard sounds and haptics
In Sounds & Haptics → Keyboard Feedback, turn on Haptic for a subtle vibration with each key press.
Getting better dictation results
Dictation is one of the fastest ways to write long messages. A few tips improve accuracy:
- Speak naturally in full sentences rather than word by word.
- Say punctuation when needed: "comma", "full stop" or "period", "question mark", "new line".
- Reduce background noise or hold the phone closer.
- Tap on words underlined in blue to pick alternatives.
- Add names you use often to contacts so dictation spells them correctly.
Keyboard tricks for productivity
- Select a word: double-tap it. Select a sentence: triple-tap. Select a paragraph: tap four times.
- Copy and paste gestures: pinch closed with three fingers to copy, pinch open to paste.
- Undo typing with a three-finger swipe left; redo with swipe right.
- Paste between devices: with Universal Clipboard, copy on your Mac and paste on your iPhone.
- Scan text into a field: in some text fields, tap and choose Scan Text to type text from the camera.
Typing Urdu or Roman Urdu
Add the Urdu keyboard in Settings → General → Keyboard → Keyboards. If you prefer Roman Urdu with Urdu-script output, a third-party keyboard like Gboard offers transliteration. See Gboard tips.
