How to Update Your iPhone Safely (and Fix Update Problems)

iOS updates fix security holes and bugs, and add new features. Installing them promptly is one of the best ways to keep your iPhone safe. Here's how to do it smoothly.

Check for updates

Go to Settings → General → Software Update. If an update is available, tap Update Now or Install Tonight.

Turn on automatic updates

Tap Automatic Updates and turn on:

  • Security Responses & System Files: installs urgent security fixes quickly.
  • iOS Updates download and install: updates overnight while charging.

Before a major update

  • Back up to iCloud or a computer.
  • Make sure you have enough free space (5–10 GB is comfortable).
  • Connect to Wi-Fi and plug in the charger.
  • Know your Apple Account password, in case you're asked to sign in.

Fixing update problems

ProblemFix
Not enough spaceFree up storage or update through a computer
Unable to verify updateSwitch Wi-Fi networks, restart, try again
Update stuckWait; if no progress for an hour, force restart
Update not showingYour iPhone may not support the new version

If the downloaded update seems corrupted, go to Settings → General → iPhone Storage, find the update, delete it, and download again.

Update using a computer

Connect the iPhone to a Mac (Finder) or Windows PC (Apple Devices app or iTunes), select the iPhone and click Check for Update. This helps when storage is very low.

After updating

Battery life may dip for a day or two while the phone re-indexes. The phone may also feel warm. This settles down.

Is my iPhone still supported?

Apple supports iPhones for many years, but older models eventually stop receiving major versions. Apple sometimes still provides security updates for older iOS versions. Check the iOS version and latest security update in Software Update.

Beware: pop-ups in Safari saying "Your iPhone is infected, update now" are scams. Real updates only appear in Settings.

What updates actually contain

Version changeExampleContains
Major18 → 19New features, design changes, security fixes
Minor18.1 → 18.2Some new features, bug and security fixes
Patch18.2 → 18.2.1Urgent bug or security fixes
Rapid Security Response / background securitySmall letter or labelUrgent security fixes, installed quickly

Patch and security updates are the most important to install quickly, since they often fix actively exploited vulnerabilities.

Back up before major updates

  1. Go to Settings → [your name] → iCloud → iCloud Backup → Back Up Now.
  2. Or connect to a computer and back up with Finder or the Apple Devices app, ticking Encrypt local backup to include passwords and Health data.
  3. Check the backup date to confirm it completed.

After a major update

  • Review new privacy settings and features introduced by the update.
  • Update your apps, since developers release compatible versions.
  • Give the iPhone a day to finish background tasks before judging battery life.
  • If an app stops working, check for its update or contact the developer.

Keeping your iPhone updated is one of the simplest and strongest protections against hacking. See iPhone privacy settings for more ways to stay safe.
