Setting Up a Smart TV: Apps, Accounts and Settings to Change
Smart TVs and streaming devices bring YouTube, Netflix and other apps to your living room. A proper setup makes them faster, safer and better-looking.
Connect to the internet
During setup, connect to Wi-Fi, preferably 5 GHz. If the router is close, an Ethernet cable is even better for 4K streaming. See Ethernet vs Wi-Fi.
Sign in to accounts
Google TV/Android TV uses a Google account; Samsung and LG have their own accounts. You can often set up faster by scanning a QR code with your phone.
Update software
Check for system updates in settings. Updates improve apps, security and features.
Install apps
Install only apps you'll use from the official app store. Avoid "free movie" apps from unknown sources, which often contain malware and pirated content.
Improve picture settings
- Choose Movie, Cinema or Filmmaker Mode for more natural colours.
- Turn off heavy motion smoothing if films look unnatural (the "soap opera effect").
- Use Game mode for consoles to reduce lag.
Sound
TV speakers are often weak. A soundbar improves dialogue clarity. Turn on dialogue enhancement if available.
Privacy settings
- Turn off ACR (Automatic Content Recognition), which tracks what you watch for advertising. It may be called "Viewing Information Services" or similar.
- Limit ad personalisation.
- Turn off the microphone for voice assistants if you don't use them.
Kids profiles
Set up kids profiles on the TV and streaming apps, and use YouTube Kids. See parental controls.
Cast from your phone

Smart TV slow?
Clear app cache, uninstall unused apps, and restart the TV by unplugging it. Older TVs benefit from an inexpensive streaming stick.
Choosing a streaming device
| Device type | Good for |
|---|---|
| Google TV / Android TV devices | Wide app selection, casting from Android phones |
| Amazon Fire TV | Simple interface, Alexa voice control |
| Apple TV | iPhone users, AirPlay, premium performance |
| Generic Android boxes | Budget, but check for official Play Store and updates |
Avoid boxes sold "fully loaded" with pirated channels; they often run outdated, insecure software and may be illegal.
Control your TV from your phone
Google TV, Samsung SmartThings, LG ThinQ and Apple TV Remote apps let you use your phone as a remote, with a keyboard for typing passwords and searches. Very handy when the remote goes missing.
Save energy
- Use energy-saving picture modes or automatic brightness.
- Turn off "quick start" or "instant on" if you want lower standby power.
- Set a sleep timer for late-night viewing.
Wall mounting and placement
Place the TV at eye level when seated, away from direct sunlight to reduce glare, and near the router or an Ethernet point for stable streaming.
