Laptop Screen Flickering? Causes and Fixes
A flickering screen is distracting and tiring on the eyes. It can be caused by software, settings or hardware. Here's how to narrow it down.
Software or hardware?
Open Task Manager (Ctrl + Shift + Esc). If Task Manager itself flickers, it's likely a driver or hardware issue. If everything except Task Manager flickers, an app is probably responsible.
Also connect an external monitor. If the external monitor is fine, the laptop's screen or cable may be faulty.
App causing flicker
Recently installed apps, especially older antivirus or screen utilities, can cause flickering. Uninstall or update them.
Update graphics drivers
Install updates from Windows Update → Optional updates, and your laptop manufacturer's site. Intel, AMD and NVIDIA also provide driver tools. If flickering started after a driver update, roll back the driver in Device Manager.
Check refresh rate
In Settings → System → Display → Advanced display, choose the laptop's recommended refresh rate. Try the other options if flickering continues. Turn off Dynamic refresh rate to test.
Brightness and power features
- Flicker at low brightness can be caused by the screen's dimming method (PWM). Raising brightness can reduce it.
- Turn off Content adaptive brightness in Display settings.
- Disable panel self-refresh or power-saving display features in Intel or AMD graphics control panels.
Hardware checks
- Flickering when you move the screen hinge suggests a loose or damaged display cable.
- Coloured lines or blocks may indicate a failing panel or graphics chip.
- Flickering only on battery or only when charging may point to a power issue or charger.
These require a technician.
External monitor flickering?
Check cables, try another port, and set the correct refresh rate for that monitor. See dual monitor setup.
Step-by-step diagnosis summary
- Note when flickering happens: always, at low brightness, on battery, or after moving the lid.
- Test with Task Manager open to separate app issues from system issues.
- Connect an external monitor to separate screen hardware from graphics problems.
- Update or roll back graphics drivers.
- Check refresh rate and adaptive brightness settings.
- Boot into BIOS: if flickering appears there too, it's almost certainly hardware.
About PWM flicker and eye comfort
Some screens control brightness by rapidly switching the backlight on and off, known as PWM dimming. At low brightness, the flicker can be fast enough that you don't consciously see it, but sensitive people may experience eye strain or headaches. If you're sensitive:
- Keep brightness at medium or higher and lower room contrast with ambient light.
- Check reviews for "PWM-free" or "flicker-free" when buying a new laptop or monitor.
- Take regular breaks. See reducing eye strain.
Warranty and repairs
Screen flickering caused by hardware faults is often covered under warranty. Record a short video of the flickering with your phone; intermittent problems may not appear during inspection. Back up your data before sending the laptop for repair.
